The site was still flooded in multiple places, less so than in January but the section of path near the pump house tested my wellies, a Christmas present having had my previous ones for over 20 years. Fortunately there was no leaks, and I walked slowly enough to not slop any water over the tops either. Duck numbers have started to drop, I didn't see any Shoveler at all on the Great Broad although there were a couple visible over the river on St Andrews Broad. There were 188 Tufted Duck and 17 Pochard, plus two Great White Egrets (one on the Little Broad, one on the Great Broad). My first singing Reed Bunting of the year was singing from the river edge, and I got good views of the redpoll flock near the gas works, eventally picking out a Mealy Redpoll amongst them.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I checked last years Grey Heron nests - one was occupied, one was empty and one had been taken over by an Egyptian Goose! In fact there might be two or even three Grey Heron nests close together, it was difficult to see if there were just three adults in close proximity of if they were all on nests.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSf-fUKkno-q35lxFNOWYGUBcT-XaGuC7ehKHsogsAdIIC3FaCY4rktncKv0KYvgu0QkQbbKxpzz4eeEWR9_cRCNjVx6iWnUjuwznTMfe_dEotiETpV2-EAfmETqQiFmGrwEwY7FRiW0fHIdVtjiJ27pj-fZ06YXazY1Vy9Jd5acQFtHmY255XiJh1mwM/s1920/P2110393.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1920" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSf-fUKkno-q35lxFNOWYGUBcT-XaGuC7ehKHsogsAdIIC3FaCY4rktncKv0KYvgu0QkQbbKxpzz4eeEWR9_cRCNjVx6iWnUjuwznTMfe_dEotiETpV2-EAfmETqQiFmGrwEwY7FRiW0fHIdVtjiJ27pj-fZ06YXazY1Vy9Jd5acQFtHmY255XiJh1mwM/s320/P2110393.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf205oufwhE65YEGkWrNtjKRlb7V2CTR-vwdF0ZWtEiyjsipGUV3oQHXoMUE90707kPmyrOVGMhyJ5FyDXsLlxRhHGausEl4VHhVwCVHpVsmd-DCeRCvdPFZ8YLQahVyBQOwKQLLc5PFj4i-1HB1rX03PriKvA9ws7qc17r6KJxniYqxqu9FQpAbNRI2Q/s1920/P2110409.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1920" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf205oufwhE65YEGkWrNtjKRlb7V2CTR-vwdF0ZWtEiyjsipGUV3oQHXoMUE90707kPmyrOVGMhyJ5FyDXsLlxRhHGausEl4VHhVwCVHpVsmd-DCeRCvdPFZ8YLQahVyBQOwKQLLc5PFj4i-1HB1rX03PriKvA9ws7qc17r6KJxniYqxqu9FQpAbNRI2Q/s320/P2110409.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Before leaving I checked out a bracket fungus growing on a cut wooden post near the visitor barn, that had first been reported to me before Christmas. Other than the two Whitlingham visits I didn't have any other dedicated wildlife-watching time. I saw one new species, a scale insect on Viburnum tinus called <i>Lichtensia viburni</i>. Whilst checking the host plant, which is widely planted in gardens and hedges around Norwich, I noticed that lots of leaves were a silvery colour. This is apparently caused by a species of Thrips called <i>Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis</i>. I've not found any so far, presumably they don't overwinter as adults this far north, but will be checking again later in the spring.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9NrjW82-JBUplZFulPf8VRR5m2-yVz1-lRLQGbOID2TnGrgpKW1ZNjhAfw2AX0m2Y2fINii62g2thpWJOrTmHActpE1qYHIVT-P82IAHhHxjlmSgBXH3JWhB6a1UGhDNtPji7mJs9tVyl56E7PoCdgXDgKkW-1WnXzf-ogS-FphPxA8j9it38i8FsLhI/s1920/P1260313.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1920" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9NrjW82-JBUplZFulPf8VRR5m2-yVz1-lRLQGbOID2TnGrgpKW1ZNjhAfw2AX0m2Y2fINii62g2thpWJOrTmHActpE1qYHIVT-P82IAHhHxjlmSgBXH3JWhB6a1UGhDNtPji7mJs9tVyl56E7PoCdgXDgKkW-1WnXzf-ogS-FphPxA8j9it38i8FsLhI/s320/P1260313.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJsFGhyxCj4zJATSd-5136SQ9hN6q8pKJaVL2nGUJkW5zchU0TkxvJFspXgyGI8LBoRIugBh7smd0-Eq9mCDRP8tVo62BxuBIC0MI0MgMkIPb_rragOHpsEjW3WVlCdbWaItjlviouJW_ve3gc_uzWWnmRSry_Oq68vbOzrsOi1jN4eXYTRzY9IJ6JifE/s1920/P1260310.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1920" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJsFGhyxCj4zJATSd-5136SQ9hN6q8pKJaVL2nGUJkW5zchU0TkxvJFspXgyGI8LBoRIugBh7smd0-Eq9mCDRP8tVo62BxuBIC0MI0MgMkIPb_rragOHpsEjW3WVlCdbWaItjlviouJW_ve3gc_uzWWnmRSry_Oq68vbOzrsOi1jN4eXYTRzY9IJ6JifE/s320/P1260310.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoXa1lS_UKoqYKfpMOBA33zQZno_1DLHBQsacR9YBHq4Ey8tQaX7_CtxYkWxpAQg3X4ByE3CDFvD4ZhnToxwveBc1TUe0lR-mtutkEsaYmZB1_LvAVfmQ9-ulfS5D1z8KftqOUblWij8XCVeQCxuSBWK_ySiiDNTQ7_WskiQTnkxv_CqsoiIL8GUXbZ10/s1920/P1260311.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1920" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoXa1lS_UKoqYKfpMOBA33zQZno_1DLHBQsacR9YBHq4Ey8tQaX7_CtxYkWxpAQg3X4ByE3CDFvD4ZhnToxwveBc1TUe0lR-mtutkEsaYmZB1_LvAVfmQ9-ulfS5D1z8KftqOUblWij8XCVeQCxuSBWK_ySiiDNTQ7_WskiQTnkxv_CqsoiIL8GUXbZ10/s320/P1260311.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: justify;">In terms of birds, in addition to those seen on January 1st or at Whitlingham I added Rook to my year list from the car whilst on a family trip to King's Lynn museum and the following: Kingfisher, Long-tailed Tit, Stock Dove (Wensum Park), Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldcrest, Coal Tit (Waterloo Park), Jay (Lakenham Way) and Grey Wagtail (Norwich city centre), so by the end of the month I had seen 47 birds at Whitlingham and 60 overall.</p>James Emersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895693455349558444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-641288652227497849.post-52454795585289496462024-01-14T19:52:00.001+00:002024-01-14T19:52:12.233+00:00WHITLINGHAM: New record Shoveler count<p><b>13th January 2024</b></p><p>The path around the Great Broad is still flooded in places, with the water level almost reaching the wooden bridges along the south shore. A local resident remarked that it was the highest he'd ever seen the water here and implicated the hard infrastructure (e.g. the car parks), but that would overlook the large swathes of the county that have been flooded for some time. Anyway, knowing what it was like I wore my wellies and carried on.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ_viAcpFXd73EZQLHTAR9QF3dvA-6BBOx5zlGR06Cayhyphenhyphend8PJ9nHqoOzzPw-JfBwqZtYqrEBEYyK95mTilM12Re9MyrQdqC9S5chWohS6rmoeE4Tn3Umqtx8CQ0_NLtSDRP8aEj589pvTA7Fpl7ogr4NYrpg2eiwkghRnFWXfW-wJfHm2g3LLt0QQ82o/s1920/P1130238.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1920" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ_viAcpFXd73EZQLHTAR9QF3dvA-6BBOx5zlGR06Cayhyphenhyphend8PJ9nHqoOzzPw-JfBwqZtYqrEBEYyK95mTilM12Re9MyrQdqC9S5chWohS6rmoeE4Tn3Umqtx8CQ0_NLtSDRP8aEj589pvTA7Fpl7ogr4NYrpg2eiwkghRnFWXfW-wJfHm2g3LLt0QQ82o/s320/P1130238.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbsHLW0Ql_Bakr40E2kZjAxDrkTxPoLMG39M1mdhBe7BsFFogJ3ExDIl035jMPD7zJac1fmyaoMyDIwvzipmZyLilJ1h560fQqdzq_ngB-WVPdMJYucWjNGfdC8tLo30f9A7dnD6CLS1YH3lVXyxGLSMrqlEuK9V2L8bmZ0-z8_NeFpk9Ek0TsLAB1c2U/s1920/P1130244.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1920" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbsHLW0Ql_Bakr40E2kZjAxDrkTxPoLMG39M1mdhBe7BsFFogJ3ExDIl035jMPD7zJac1fmyaoMyDIwvzipmZyLilJ1h560fQqdzq_ngB-WVPdMJYucWjNGfdC8tLo30f9A7dnD6CLS1YH3lVXyxGLSMrqlEuK9V2L8bmZ0-z8_NeFpk9Ek0TsLAB1c2U/s320/P1130244.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvSL02LEerfjPfwr6tzaWsurmK69_ZoG8cGadKB-P_3hNk6S7XOju6nN5RbeV-B4ZWVTtN4hbwVXfFcLynStkb1BRJfiW2ZxDdQpRHGVWZmNEVojXNuVAjUnvgtDsafRn7PV9eZVtN8_95P0YFE5OxtOxP6_3TOw0aCr9LCvPoOvs7dt9HCFQ2wu0SLWs/s1920/P1130234.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1920" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvSL02LEerfjPfwr6tzaWsurmK69_ZoG8cGadKB-P_3hNk6S7XOju6nN5RbeV-B4ZWVTtN4hbwVXfFcLynStkb1BRJfiW2ZxDdQpRHGVWZmNEVojXNuVAjUnvgtDsafRn7PV9eZVtN8_95P0YFE5OxtOxP6_3TOw0aCr9LCvPoOvs7dt9HCFQ2wu0SLWs/s320/P1130234.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: justify;">As it was WeBS weekend I carried out a complete wildfowl count, the undoubted highlight of which was the number of Shoveler present. They started increasing in number during the week, and the 61+ present on Friday had been a new site record, but careful scanning from multiple viewpoints led to me counting (and double-counting!) 83 on Saturday, a mixture of adult drakes, immature drakes and females. So currently a site high count, but who is to say that the numbers won't keep increasing over the next week?</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">Sadly there was no sign of the Pintail that had been seen on Friday, a bird I've only seen here twice. There were however 2 Goldeneye, 2 Wigeon, 249 Tufted Ducks (including the pink-billed one), 122 Gadwall, 25 Teal and 11 Pochard, so a good selection of ducks. The wintering Great White Egret showed well, as did the 'brown' Cormorant discussed in last years Whitlingham Bird Report. I am therefore leaving the last 6 months unwritten and starting again with the best of intentions!</p><p><b>1st January 2024</b></p><p>I started the year as usual, staring out of my living room window trying to see what birds were landing in some distant trees or flying past. I managed to see a slightly disappointing 8 species, beginning with Woodpigeon followed by Feral Pigeon, Collared Dove, Herring Gull, Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Magpie and Starling. A visit to the in-laws produced several additional garden species, notably Goldfinch, House Sparrow, Blackbird, Dunnock and Jackdaw. It was then off to Whitlingham for an after-lunch walk.</p><p>The water levels at Whitlingham were probably the highest that I have ever seen them, with the circular path flooded in multiple places. Knowing this I was wearing my wellies and comfortably made it round. Some of the recent ducks had either departed or were too hidden to pick out with binoculars (I didn't see Teal, Pochard or Goldeneye) but I did see two Great White Egrets, Shoveler and Great Black-backed Gull, which were decent first of January birds here. The local aberrant Cormorant was present just before dusk, although as it seems to have moulted a bit it no longer sticks out as much. As I was leaving I also noticed a Carrion Crow with a few pale feathers too. Sighting of the day was perhaps a large Pike, seen well as it lurked under one of the bridges.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlEGAgzNr-dkBeVLOCCu5oJsgE4VUAYudI3J0qk1ViVpH_6KkDlTG5qtidQ8Lh7VwOnooX7vBWExGsQsxnTOb006u0Z4u9kNm_8OuV6LYWDjDoiNxogNXEf_vYyiOiapWmF81TiUVdHbLL1Tt8JnMsiipdP5dzQvb0DW_nPoc10qOnEQF-O-vEyHS9MKc/s1920/P1010088.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1920" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlEGAgzNr-dkBeVLOCCu5oJsgE4VUAYudI3J0qk1ViVpH_6KkDlTG5qtidQ8Lh7VwOnooX7vBWExGsQsxnTOb006u0Z4u9kNm_8OuV6LYWDjDoiNxogNXEf_vYyiOiapWmF81TiUVdHbLL1Tt8JnMsiipdP5dzQvb0DW_nPoc10qOnEQF-O-vEyHS9MKc/s320/P1010088.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>If you squint you can see the Pike!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgltwyNwDlbMq4usxkZBnhr8Gg3ByN2eWgTl-bPLEzbpzo-QoXuxMgbITZ7aPZgo633AfONfxZYcACui_tAdL72PQ3V-37_-JUftwCursRNhB09WgGzBWZhAc55nkA6ORjoIPKWk8Y6ehiIpOc5GkNSWycQBaYV4kvswymCtPHvES0D4WJP0sBDEshmfo8/s2560/P1120627.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="2560" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgltwyNwDlbMq4usxkZBnhr8Gg3ByN2eWgTl-bPLEzbpzo-QoXuxMgbITZ7aPZgo633AfONfxZYcACui_tAdL72PQ3V-37_-JUftwCursRNhB09WgGzBWZhAc55nkA6ORjoIPKWk8Y6ehiIpOc5GkNSWycQBaYV4kvswymCtPHvES0D4WJP0sBDEshmfo8/s320/P1120627.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Great White Egret, Grey Heron and 2 Little Egrets</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUebfh99E0ImWR0VKbh3qaypGQRhY1Zxu_7vz4hHhmoK5bG9jwDbhCpllozpMlOZ2nxzX6QfcvD7Gahz9AJdkc6J5sBoZ8o4z4v9N8iTVpwU6IysJCXqNhZ8bC_L9S7kXuq50pkE4A4dSIm8fuFD4F-vJQGXgb2vqGRaQW8DLCjLezX_IC0pMhTokCBk8/s2560/P1120630.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="2560" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUebfh99E0ImWR0VKbh3qaypGQRhY1Zxu_7vz4hHhmoK5bG9jwDbhCpllozpMlOZ2nxzX6QfcvD7Gahz9AJdkc6J5sBoZ8o4z4v9N8iTVpwU6IysJCXqNhZ8bC_L9S7kXuq50pkE4A4dSIm8fuFD4F-vJQGXgb2vqGRaQW8DLCjLezX_IC0pMhTokCBk8/s320/P1120630.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqMoMT5aFxHhd8JAmqF297hVeDwrrx12GuHRPBatq73K81VRetiJzj13TanvzJUjdX6Xe4KhiBvWCcsjPyMjH0BU-cfkKziw6j3b4xqTnmSmzHDtwaOMeMiF9gC4RXzQiyoyEnqrfEgJ8NZ9q76lwBT7LPq5VIcYeyyFLd1v-UnHQf3O5fQ1gK3rdUf9Y/s2560/P1120658.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="2560" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqMoMT5aFxHhd8JAmqF297hVeDwrrx12GuHRPBatq73K81VRetiJzj13TanvzJUjdX6Xe4KhiBvWCcsjPyMjH0BU-cfkKziw6j3b4xqTnmSmzHDtwaOMeMiF9gC4RXzQiyoyEnqrfEgJ8NZ9q76lwBT7LPq5VIcYeyyFLd1v-UnHQf3O5fQ1gK3rdUf9Y/s320/P1120658.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Kestrel<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgL4T1zSyMlvueZicEwEEfQwCP4-myNfssRJdta86VgPa0bwvi1Qw-HkPEYpq8sV-4shwdzUjN5QX0FnruvQ6JgYjfmL1825WW_ewnTimKE6FLVJpQ9GAfVd_LdGmqW53Bvz5lYDdPlyY-1IlTLhWqZ9lokROxspAAkUB5AeJPouTqNc_blN1BkGoSu-s/s2560/P1120673.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="2560" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgL4T1zSyMlvueZicEwEEfQwCP4-myNfssRJdta86VgPa0bwvi1Qw-HkPEYpq8sV-4shwdzUjN5QX0FnruvQ6JgYjfmL1825WW_ewnTimKE6FLVJpQ9GAfVd_LdGmqW53Bvz5lYDdPlyY-1IlTLhWqZ9lokROxspAAkUB5AeJPouTqNc_blN1BkGoSu-s/s320/P1120673.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;">Carrion Crow with a few white feathers</p>James Emersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895693455349558444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-641288652227497849.post-6752254182712965092023-10-21T11:10:00.002+01:002023-10-21T11:10:15.911+01:00WHITLINGHAM: Delayed June WeBS count<p><b>Late June 2023</b></p><p>I had to delay June's WeBS count as there had been triathlons using the Great Broad. The wasn't anything particularly notable in terms of birds - 113 Greylag Geese, 57 Mute Swans (plus some cygnets in the conservation area bay) and 47 Egyptian Geese. A couple of Common Terns were also still present. The dry weather meant that there wasn't much in the way of 'cap and stem' fungi, but we did find quite a few interesting things in a relatively small patch of wet woodland, as well as enjoying some nice views over the broad. Some of the new species for me included <i>Podosphaera mors-uvae</i> (American Gooseberry Mildew), <i>Hymenoscyphus salicellus</i>, <i>Vibrissea filisporia</i> and<i> Pandora dipterigena</i> (the latter a fungus on mosquitoes).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRB2dMmU1fO4IHeQ-36EIAC4DUNH8Sd_eA5hRFUj0pIcOPnuxqAiW7N65xvEAD6eNKyBdaYh_CJ0pmo3dR-4zTWCuwW83kQvlSWbcbgIw8mdv0UAFA2rEjEDl5Tajo6isidzyM-pEJZlbbWssJWwL9oJrUK8ejc6sGAlraiR0n7Om-VWG1NVEb6UY-7fg/s3200/P6170068.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRB2dMmU1fO4IHeQ-36EIAC4DUNH8Sd_eA5hRFUj0pIcOPnuxqAiW7N65xvEAD6eNKyBdaYh_CJ0pmo3dR-4zTWCuwW83kQvlSWbcbgIw8mdv0UAFA2rEjEDl5Tajo6isidzyM-pEJZlbbWssJWwL9oJrUK8ejc6sGAlraiR0n7Om-VWG1NVEb6UY-7fg/s320/P6170068.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlIPGLxZTOxRdcuS7eukLbctKE1uFLsQlxJQ6oM7kY7h7oYQKnnKAnUGA_JUaz9KxgHNVQfz4dlGuQo1aGu3FXJzs2k-dKse8yExoWEGh1DvrN-B9sW9ikzqs8QBhh007nSDpctxqpb0xPcixdkbrjjahKVVrIjAH9pDIaXDVc_POSAlKtUvZ85ft1-A0/s3200/P6170070.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlIPGLxZTOxRdcuS7eukLbctKE1uFLsQlxJQ6oM7kY7h7oYQKnnKAnUGA_JUaz9KxgHNVQfz4dlGuQo1aGu3FXJzs2k-dKse8yExoWEGh1DvrN-B9sW9ikzqs8QBhh007nSDpctxqpb0xPcixdkbrjjahKVVrIjAH9pDIaXDVc_POSAlKtUvZ85ft1-A0/s320/P6170070.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFn56YCyFCpiEXcTgkB3AuwLN6iu5u4UVtx8qwZ_rWrPJ_vDKAidvSIbwMH7QMXPdGc-GbNg9_dSIRE7r3JDLAoiv9S2QVpOE4NJSjQE1S5M52O570CAGZL8pZQVWiUYeGACVEs4tEPAQQ1DEHuoGWui7aIEoa3daelwbqzFdBsihWUD1rHeHml5t4R4E/s3200/P6170075.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFn56YCyFCpiEXcTgkB3AuwLN6iu5u4UVtx8qwZ_rWrPJ_vDKAidvSIbwMH7QMXPdGc-GbNg9_dSIRE7r3JDLAoiv9S2QVpOE4NJSjQE1S5M52O570CAGZL8pZQVWiUYeGACVEs4tEPAQQ1DEHuoGWui7aIEoa3daelwbqzFdBsihWUD1rHeHml5t4R4E/s320/P6170075.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSjU74ZlHhPIZez1CG93OfzVjElT9z3g8kXMZ1zCbPvidIvIXLifTU_umDNSUUIVprY3eG8ninBCZP7xuTbShr6eKakZkQ7pLxAx_BFBAe6JmOE-mGdTSBoN2HO2gzI66HZzhOKOtQci3IuD68HB01kK5b8qK01_jiM_QUgSr_k3UnY0DshxwygapfZe4/s3200/P6170104.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSjU74ZlHhPIZez1CG93OfzVjElT9z3g8kXMZ1zCbPvidIvIXLifTU_umDNSUUIVprY3eG8ninBCZP7xuTbShr6eKakZkQ7pLxAx_BFBAe6JmOE-mGdTSBoN2HO2gzI66HZzhOKOtQci3IuD68HB01kK5b8qK01_jiM_QUgSr_k3UnY0DshxwygapfZe4/s320/P6170104.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Afterwards we had a quick walk around the boat club woods, where we also had permission to record. Despite not venturing too far out on the reserve there was a lot to see, the highlight of which was probably my first Rosy Woodlouse, <i>Androniscus dentiger</i>. Prior to my visit I had seen a smut fungus found on sedges (<i>Farysia thuemenii</i>) mentioned, and these things often tend to have good and bad years, so I checked some sedges and low-and-behold found absolutely loads of it. A third new species was Cyperus Sedge, which was common along the edges of the dykes. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivjIkZDIHUS5LJg0mycNM4fdMtva_UsudcDZQorDn3UGrKD8vqd1v6aV_CyVb9wd5WXJUCOQMpGUxRiensHmAAt6Ad5e40GjS-hOdvismJxpL4dVIBEzJPHmeaQTqP9WDB1ZScx8me57X1dSIL02oKgrgqj-0WjkLlFlZUsiEfjLmw8tHLGP_7GGtURig/s2037/Rosy%20woodlouse.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1528" data-original-width="2037" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivjIkZDIHUS5LJg0mycNM4fdMtva_UsudcDZQorDn3UGrKD8vqd1v6aV_CyVb9wd5WXJUCOQMpGUxRiensHmAAt6Ad5e40GjS-hOdvismJxpL4dVIBEzJPHmeaQTqP9WDB1ZScx8me57X1dSIL02oKgrgqj-0WjkLlFlZUsiEfjLmw8tHLGP_7GGtURig/s320/Rosy%20woodlouse.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw6OmyYNWrlIoAfHSDjOzQ0NJRQ3x8OD77N6H49BuP8mu8e28V8KfZl74Hk6zjJ7CiQNrknIvTX3bJL_tTFPqKvR2ZmOM-3H28LhmDjP_bSBJCThDlsgJUQT_tcxWYEWW9z2FME2ZK5gdJ51AhifOLqXcWCz1mjn4_LJVSK9_xpgSKDCT1uQuB6CZSgls/s3200/Farysia%20thuemenii%20James%20Emerson.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw6OmyYNWrlIoAfHSDjOzQ0NJRQ3x8OD77N6H49BuP8mu8e28V8KfZl74Hk6zjJ7CiQNrknIvTX3bJL_tTFPqKvR2ZmOM-3H28LhmDjP_bSBJCThDlsgJUQT_tcxWYEWW9z2FME2ZK5gdJ51AhifOLqXcWCz1mjn4_LJVSK9_xpgSKDCT1uQuB6CZSgls/s320/Farysia%20thuemenii%20James%20Emerson.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTbBiRGRSdJvk4Z0ZW1pNiXPt5JUCCU_AnLgeqmo2Oie6SLU-J0v8PtxkY7z5m3x_wTLsyojtyxZoWdB4cj1IMtK7iGztfRYOgkIURH9Q4Gwlw_7PMiVfvv5buCUAUAmPTumQlpw_z_VhD7JrLymm9IyPdBpy3RmW0hmOHEUJ9Gz6J2Kh1qx38Fysfoz0/s2560/P1120528.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="2560" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTbBiRGRSdJvk4Z0ZW1pNiXPt5JUCCU_AnLgeqmo2Oie6SLU-J0v8PtxkY7z5m3x_wTLsyojtyxZoWdB4cj1IMtK7iGztfRYOgkIURH9Q4Gwlw_7PMiVfvv5buCUAUAmPTumQlpw_z_VhD7JrLymm9IyPdBpy3RmW0hmOHEUJ9Gz6J2Kh1qx38Fysfoz0/s320/P1120528.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2Q5xY_grSdKjJ7sOIoANcfx7c9yosaJBOyl0CFaj4_o5O4T06y8-GwnhYZ90YI1e5aKH3dCeOC_iI8FYeF9sHW3JwsMj98-DdvhD9d0IEIfLETMKjTZ-wQz81WankXMkhRGfrQupBcaghMQ_Pr1DSH54yPBYCRpa7QHSEYhKoezkAu-LybFEtbOFdNuE/s3200/P6160918.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2Q5xY_grSdKjJ7sOIoANcfx7c9yosaJBOyl0CFaj4_o5O4T06y8-GwnhYZ90YI1e5aKH3dCeOC_iI8FYeF9sHW3JwsMj98-DdvhD9d0IEIfLETMKjTZ-wQz81WankXMkhRGfrQupBcaghMQ_Pr1DSH54yPBYCRpa7QHSEYhKoezkAu-LybFEtbOFdNuE/s320/P6160918.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p><br /></p>James Emersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895693455349558444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-641288652227497849.post-75689727654656184652023-09-11T22:45:00.001+01:002023-09-11T22:45:07.060+01:00NORTH NORFOLK: Bacton Woods June invertebrates<p><b>Mid June 2023</b></p><p>A family walk around Bacton Woods. There was something of interest for everyone, taking in the museum, old workhouse, farm and some of the rewilded land along the river. I was particularly keen to have a look around the orchard, but was a bit underwhelmed at how big it was! A good sign that it wasn't too busy was a Grey Heron beside the path out onto the marsh, which reluctantly flew as I approached. Two recently fledged Stonechats could be seen further across the marsh, pleasing to see this species is still hanging on in this urban-ish location. The highlight of the visit was a new bug for me, <i>Pachybrachius fracticollis,</i> but there was plenty else of interest including lots of European Chinchbugs, several <i>Anasimyia lineata</i> hoverflies and great views of a settled Hairy Dragonfly. A smut fungus, <i>Anthracoidea subinclusa, </i>was found on Carex riparia, whilst on Hawthorn were some adult <i>Cacopsylla peregrina</i> psyllids.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhquWTZXVxR2zR97KZJVZq6o53M_MCivKObcCQVqIzzRnacDVMY_QSggXnVNtzBnNEZvC1gqRmoNB_5dUoRxFEXDL2at4OyOSDhVMK1TbR6Fv49HqoHPby-LJ54_nHcvWAE4Fm6O3KNMbZtxfZqTGH6yiVnifaUlngMKmW0otqqLvi04pO0CnXyvS6UUc/s3200/P5271783.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; They are often found around sap runs on tree trunks rather than visiting flowers. They can also be tricky to separate, with ID based on a combination of scutellum colour and the presence/absence/shape of a small pit on the first antennal segment. Earlier in the month Vanna Bartlett had noticed several <i>Brachyopa</i> visiting a tree in Earlham Cemetery and managed to confirm that they were <i>Brachyopa insensilis.</i> Having only ever seen one <i>Brachyopa</i> before (and not confirmed that to species), I gratefully accepted directions and spent some time near the tree in question. During my stay I saw two individuals coming and going, completely non-plussed about my presence.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgea79gAnumRVk0EFqD8iBGLh81WwNQjzLlKeo3U0SC1CS9Ib7T97Tsy4sq-ajKVYVqnp3eS8M_7_eKuO_qUKOaX9MUiamNB2hkXQItR1jisb_p3_MddD6NINHpBDO0n7yyDU_82u5uKUZlBzcO19XSYcopenqQZ7arFFQ-NbSZeOpne6joSZ_U1nRuFLY/s3200/P5271723.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgea79gAnumRVk0EFqD8iBGLh81WwNQjzLlKeo3U0SC1CS9Ib7T97Tsy4sq-ajKVYVqnp3eS8M_7_eKuO_qUKOaX9MUiamNB2hkXQItR1jisb_p3_MddD6NINHpBDO0n7yyDU_82u5uKUZlBzcO19XSYcopenqQZ7arFFQ-NbSZeOpne6joSZ_U1nRuFLY/s320/P5271723.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdLIftyFlaQOVeaVhaOJXK8JJ54oJbhQkIF1o-f8OHktl_RDUyycKuCw606kgLuDMTtOulIiqpNOXkFizTe3leR6y0hHMjUTwhxhw3MsBuRrvPI-G_AcUZNEn3UX_HXNvTdHsebgp6VJAQd0SokqBSSqr6OPlXLHlFbmvz3MDJTZlo8xvY-bNDzz6ZiSs/s3200/P5271730.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdLIftyFlaQOVeaVhaOJXK8JJ54oJbhQkIF1o-f8OHktl_RDUyycKuCw606kgLuDMTtOulIiqpNOXkFizTe3leR6y0hHMjUTwhxhw3MsBuRrvPI-G_AcUZNEn3UX_HXNvTdHsebgp6VJAQd0SokqBSSqr6OPlXLHlFbmvz3MDJTZlo8xvY-bNDzz6ZiSs/s320/P5271730.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLvrQEhDZVubXL6cSjBk-NojgAnuLDWRSnoO4yaFA4lxSXsrgeSRFCphTJ2rl0H-RqvY0xcaziq_HLVEQbqFEMo9_Odt9cf9YKKk5ORWAwYM1mQdsEh9IWv4ivVNdsAArBgRyGWx-NopT-qOaMXv_sWjPROlyCm7j3AztUaPoyOwoE1qO-OpIOrA9qDyo/s3200/P5271738.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLvrQEhDZVubXL6cSjBk-NojgAnuLDWRSnoO4yaFA4lxSXsrgeSRFCphTJ2rl0H-RqvY0xcaziq_HLVEQbqFEMo9_Odt9cf9YKKk5ORWAwYM1mQdsEh9IWv4ivVNdsAArBgRyGWx-NopT-qOaMXv_sWjPROlyCm7j3AztUaPoyOwoE1qO-OpIOrA9qDyo/s320/P5271738.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p>James Emersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895693455349558444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-641288652227497849.post-3818510493352715232023-09-02T22:47:00.003+01:002023-09-02T22:47:53.729+01:00WHITLINGHAM: New hide, fledged herons and another psyllid<p><b>21st May 2023</b></p><p>The most notable thing about May's Whitlingham WeBS count was getting to see the new hide. From a distance it looks very nice, blending in with the landscape. Unfortunately as an actual bird hide there are a few issues. The curved roof means that you cannot stand up near the edges of it, so you can only use it by sitting down. There is one moveable bench to allow you to do this - I really hope that this is treated respectfully and remains there, but the idea of having an unfixed bench on an urban nature reserve is not one I would have suggested.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; An article and county list will be published in NNNS Transactions either late 2023 or early 2024.</p><p>All but a handful of gall-causing species are under-recorded in Norfolk, so I have been checking possible host plants all around the city. There are few records of this attractive red-and-black bug in Norfolk, although they are spreading northwards (and be aware there is another red-and-black bug that is common in Norfolk, Corizus hysoscyami). On my first visit to the cemetery I didn't see any Firebugs, but did find a Bordered Shieldbug, which was a decent sighting. Soon after both Vanna Bartlett and Chris Lansdell had seen large numbers of Firebugs, suggesting that there was a breeding colony. I returned for a quick visit and this time soon found them. The foodplants are Lime trees (Tilia) and Mallow (Malva), both of which are plentiful around Norwich, so it is likely we will be seeing more Firebugs soon.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8AEeRDPS41ZkWYAsHGsxQ7kWJZkzjWSIMUtXweA946Vw__RAsUDS0YjFtPTaPBRz5EX3qqgxQjPVL-5qflr2cCihCnpaTiE6JJSgE7yIcBNXQeHf6GxnpMnWtUjCoP5aX1nBjqh9WXJnOoXx8l_lakudIqWjCHEJKsFqFRkJPa36l_dMRnWJdL9FYr04/s3200/P4291467.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8AEeRDPS41ZkWYAsHGsxQ7kWJZkzjWSIMUtXweA946Vw__RAsUDS0YjFtPTaPBRz5EX3qqgxQjPVL-5qflr2cCihCnpaTiE6JJSgE7yIcBNXQeHf6GxnpMnWtUjCoP5aX1nBjqh9WXJnOoXx8l_lakudIqWjCHEJKsFqFRkJPa36l_dMRnWJdL9FYr04/s320/P4291467.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMzaIWZXgH0ywZQuHcYvoksMCeJTTS-vXycchRgg3KGByjs0B8YxCeWgWWouD1fXhnUl9HLJGr1Ze1lINTmJ57VIQ9U10Ky0CSYgCId6ehwfoRW8zZahAwQIWxYJJ2hrWeDe82s3QEVtbZXlSdMi4Ve3qdqpgDvGrq3e1XhdGCSXczhKX19lbYy3psaOA/s3200/P5020265.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMzaIWZXgH0ywZQuHcYvoksMCeJTTS-vXycchRgg3KGByjs0B8YxCeWgWWouD1fXhnUl9HLJGr1Ze1lINTmJ57VIQ9U10Ky0CSYgCId6ehwfoRW8zZahAwQIWxYJJ2hrWeDe82s3QEVtbZXlSdMi4Ve3qdqpgDvGrq3e1XhdGCSXczhKX19lbYy3psaOA/s320/P5020265.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3WTGY48xVtp2CI-gWGFp0ZszFJNAb0f6YBnczXMswoki02DedWmu1fvGoB0_ia89aWv7xMkDFZKq8Z6yp8dYCl54FshdXJxGGdX3sg65IgVsWn_yLKL2L937--IcwGXad6SnhcOn0pFu_Td6iOcUhqJPp-dX1AbWieMpcH3gUHl11pxaqa1Kx4KISc2c/s3200/P5020273.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3WTGY48xVtp2CI-gWGFp0ZszFJNAb0f6YBnczXMswoki02DedWmu1fvGoB0_ia89aWv7xMkDFZKq8Z6yp8dYCl54FshdXJxGGdX3sg65IgVsWn_yLKL2L937--IcwGXad6SnhcOn0pFu_Td6iOcUhqJPp-dX1AbWieMpcH3gUHl11pxaqa1Kx4KISc2c/s320/P5020273.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9gNLDs-0trgczgzk59m_fcAHrKgp6jMrKqw0oUP1G6a6hVOZpntSvTrGlM7rypAn8Ko9Ih5cw6LTjoYBM2OOcfmv4I23CzwpTzHy_eQdKTDUTvB6ulSh0DmP_Fn3z9rq8hBiSvlnpKxWgFI3N_vCns22sydPPJR_A-blfijxNYwe5Gz-UYFx4EPU_LqE/s3200/P5020276.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9gNLDs-0trgczgzk59m_fcAHrKgp6jMrKqw0oUP1G6a6hVOZpntSvTrGlM7rypAn8Ko9Ih5cw6LTjoYBM2OOcfmv4I23CzwpTzHy_eQdKTDUTvB6ulSh0DmP_Fn3z9rq8hBiSvlnpKxWgFI3N_vCns22sydPPJR_A-blfijxNYwe5Gz-UYFx4EPU_LqE/s320/P5020276.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>James Emersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895693455349558444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-641288652227497849.post-6262307979828822512023-08-31T21:18:00.001+01:002023-08-31T21:18:06.366+01:00WHITLINGHAM: April WeBS highlights<p><b>Mid-April 2023</b></p><p>The April WeBS count turned up the expected range of common wildfowl, plus my first Sedge Warbler, Whitethroat, Common Tern, Swallow, Sand Martin and House Martin of the year. Two Cuckoos were present and at one point I watched one chase the other along the treeline. A Skylark singing opposite the large car park was unusual here despite their presence on nearby farmland. Five Pochard were still present, along with a scattering of Gadwall, Teal and Tufted Duck, whilst a Canada Goose had five goslings. The most notable observation of the visit however were several Cormorants on nests, which as far as I am aware is the first time here and is still unusual in a Norfolk context, despite the large numbers of wintering birds. Grey Herons also nested successfully, with three large young visible in the nest used last year. Other than birds, both Aglaostigma sawflies were seen in several places around the site.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrvsJI-qRVVOmJR-mVpT2ydQoEzbtMdxOvuKyv7-5sJlVLxDgscBJM88x45ZmMav8sbDfS4YbrW_GAcpwJJflm7VyN8fn52KI5j2bbB1GXnwy7rS7ggsaa9eBPfKMNlgEK843S5L-WvD9nHkqkwr5UcjHfIo66hWXgKL1rMRYABMc9ldfET7rDNp6lA8Y/s2094/Canada%20Goose%20crop.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1571" data-original-width="2094" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrvsJI-qRVVOmJR-mVpT2ydQoEzbtMdxOvuKyv7-5sJlVLxDgscBJM88x45ZmMav8sbDfS4YbrW_GAcpwJJflm7VyN8fn52KI5j2bbB1GXnwy7rS7ggsaa9eBPfKMNlgEK843S5L-WvD9nHkqkwr5UcjHfIo66hWXgKL1rMRYABMc9ldfET7rDNp6lA8Y/s320/Canada%20Goose%20crop.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwMxO1V2Z0lV9PjuLElXw9n3IUElO_p36T0Kyfl45aYlzatqdPOsHF7Gr97pugOM84N9REaxnuLNb3o5roF570hcoDv1Hy4583YKy6bv3EweFm01lndpewkGKQQ6fDBRHoyHedibtohp4TuDWf1Gw9Ga46lnCxQtLnxEDAjKlZyUpA1Kn23l0iYA297fg/s1786/Cuckoo%20crop.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1339" data-original-width="1786" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwMxO1V2Z0lV9PjuLElXw9n3IUElO_p36T0Kyfl45aYlzatqdPOsHF7Gr97pugOM84N9REaxnuLNb3o5roF570hcoDv1Hy4583YKy6bv3EweFm01lndpewkGKQQ6fDBRHoyHedibtohp4TuDWf1Gw9Ga46lnCxQtLnxEDAjKlZyUpA1Kn23l0iYA297fg/s320/Cuckoo%20crop.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM6NEeIZ_s62FrJtPNcqIrBUwy4I6yGkXbSUDo5K99VcS-qzLRHy6jsXSdIcVh46-wRnMmKU4knlt-fb-SwKMaQj3GtJ3bX8TBil5T4GwPaLO3shNm3YeGJvs10C6zNz7pn7drYfEuM382YEf15jGGX0XnjnGPS-kWg69ysrnzr00XKsQSvDXdofvl-2w/s3200/P4220089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM6NEeIZ_s62FrJtPNcqIrBUwy4I6yGkXbSUDo5K99VcS-qzLRHy6jsXSdIcVh46-wRnMmKU4knlt-fb-SwKMaQj3GtJ3bX8TBil5T4GwPaLO3shNm3YeGJvs10C6zNz7pn7drYfEuM382YEf15jGGX0XnjnGPS-kWg69ysrnzr00XKsQSvDXdofvl-2w/s320/P4220089.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p><br /></p>James Emersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895693455349558444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-641288652227497849.post-52990351242849697162023-08-30T22:11:00.004+01:002023-08-30T22:11:32.924+01:00NORWICH: April Earlham Cemetery visits<p><b>Early April 2023</b></p><p>I visited Earlham Cemetery twice in April, firstly for an event organised by the Friends of Earlham Cemetery to look at mosses, and secondly for a few hours on a sunny day looking for hoverflies. The unexpected highlight was the rookery, which is stretched out either side of one of the paths. Rooks are one of our favourite birds (there is a picture of one up in the house!) and it was great to look up and see them wheeling overhead as they swooped down onto their nests. We also found several eggshells on the path, allowing us to get a close up view of an egg you would normally only see if you were in the treetops.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMZu6hLfKARZTy6Efkh10wdU7mKag89p2PtHia9T-7Ph-rBj5HK6ojJMBalvrCqCEpBYNQjGlz3DjPa_o-j9QKuOhLlQtOh_NZPJcq1KCcC7XrlK2s1texXkyET9TAEFPzfwFOSmdkPhEdxHQeHDH48P4sbO1T6PE0x_im3CM_vq7Xk4YSPNodmV__cOo/s3200/P4020521.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMZu6hLfKARZTy6Efkh10wdU7mKag89p2PtHia9T-7Ph-rBj5HK6ojJMBalvrCqCEpBYNQjGlz3DjPa_o-j9QKuOhLlQtOh_NZPJcq1KCcC7XrlK2s1texXkyET9TAEFPzfwFOSmdkPhEdxHQeHDH48P4sbO1T6PE0x_im3CM_vq7Xk4YSPNodmV__cOo/s320/P4020521.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_bzWbZ8AKePoo05FJU4UOpKr_TBZvY5R3LB8v01Jmrg7LKPw1D2EgUz5CcFp8ewThDaggaEXwNHd9gGF_D76TR4a7p-M1u7g8egOtHLhb_Q35uPIUEjVTI36ZlsVErhTurxRrNKz-nuujPkJyRPaqNJUcehil_xEpVA0es_28372Yltx-bYdJ9xSCav4/s3200/P4020523.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3200" data-original-width="2400" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_bzWbZ8AKePoo05FJU4UOpKr_TBZvY5R3LB8v01Jmrg7LKPw1D2EgUz5CcFp8ewThDaggaEXwNHd9gGF_D76TR4a7p-M1u7g8egOtHLhb_Q35uPIUEjVTI36ZlsVErhTurxRrNKz-nuujPkJyRPaqNJUcehil_xEpVA0es_28372Yltx-bYdJ9xSCav4/s320/P4020523.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzQpl8KZPqt11wXNwLsQN42eCaE6MMezTeYFfAj2n1cnTF0Qe-dyhW95leSXEzc7uHdTxbEMgIf8DhEOSMnIhe3fisTHWE5nSqpkPUJdoVMIwL0L0H8jrGi2cVFW46jkjKCSsFMqZHI5Sfb7o-l9F5pfzDuVmdVqeMwwBfxn1MmPUXrMJMu-wjl7TOmV4/s3200/P4020484.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzQpl8KZPqt11wXNwLsQN42eCaE6MMezTeYFfAj2n1cnTF0Qe-dyhW95leSXEzc7uHdTxbEMgIf8DhEOSMnIhe3fisTHWE5nSqpkPUJdoVMIwL0L0H8jrGi2cVFW46jkjKCSsFMqZHI5Sfb7o-l9F5pfzDuVmdVqeMwwBfxn1MmPUXrMJMu-wjl7TOmV4/s320/P4020484.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3G8cd4CLekL6GYJ-SqzcEr0weSS3GrG8NSUOcgwRJR7-BLOPk19Gh4NqdXYlbh8XVPXjMqTLFl7tJ_cA9F0VCA7_utK6MUB8Sq9nj_-4MytrodjHqKHKcJnXQbANrAaXD0o2w3g2phA9Hstk6QinuccDeC7YF5hxxiT5M9xdl0RoxI3Si9uHKuGYuQLo/s3200/P4020498.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3G8cd4CLekL6GYJ-SqzcEr0weSS3GrG8NSUOcgwRJR7-BLOPk19Gh4NqdXYlbh8XVPXjMqTLFl7tJ_cA9F0VCA7_utK6MUB8Sq9nj_-4MytrodjHqKHKcJnXQbANrAaXD0o2w3g2phA9Hstk6QinuccDeC7YF5hxxiT5M9xdl0RoxI3Si9uHKuGYuQLo/s320/P4020498.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCPjoYehKSmgOtgYN3b6EV8ehCs2EYlkiQSj-K0vqJPbxMEjh090Rtwg2rdOKJ-8p-fpxAzzj0l3rBq8Un3CxtMRbMM9vHHsVavYm1ttojOrQIspN-IK5ZWS5hQv_DoQaYFISpR3aK4agp1YjVYlxyN6nf67apjLzZyyKpYyK1fT-9tg-vXrWeZiB5Jvg/s3200/P4020536.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCPjoYehKSmgOtgYN3b6EV8ehCs2EYlkiQSj-K0vqJPbxMEjh090Rtwg2rdOKJ-8p-fpxAzzj0l3rBq8Un3CxtMRbMM9vHHsVavYm1ttojOrQIspN-IK5ZWS5hQv_DoQaYFISpR3aK4agp1YjVYlxyN6nf67apjLzZyyKpYyK1fT-9tg-vXrWeZiB5Jvg/s320/P4020536.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p><br /></p>James Emersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895693455349558444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-641288652227497849.post-70725468167607446462023-05-09T22:12:00.006+01:002023-05-09T22:12:44.809+01:00YARE VALLEY: Buckenham Carr March fungus foray<b>18th March 2023</b><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">My first Norfolk Fungus Study Group foray of the year saw the group return to Buckenham Carrs, a recent NNNS research project site. Whilst walking around the site multiple Chiffchaffs were singing, a Barn Owl flew silently over Buckenham Broad and in the distance Cranes were calling. I saw quite a few new species of fungi, but annoyingly I only got a poor record shot of the most pleasing one, Ruby Elf Cup (<i>Sarcoscypha coccinea</i>). In Norfolk we have two species of red elf cup, both almost identical to the eye but separable with care under the microscope. All of the ones I have checked, and most in the county in general are<i> Sarcoscypha austriaca,</i> so when we saw some I assumed that is what they would be. Fortunately Steve took one away to check and discovered that it was <i>S. coccinea</i>. Other highlights included Poplar Bell (<i>Schizophyllum amplum</i>), the second Norfolk record of Moss Ear (<i>Chromocyphella muscicola</i>), <i>Thyronectria sinoptica</i> on Ivy and <i>Mollisia amenticola</i> on Alder cones.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Whilst scanning trees on the meadows in the vain hope of seeing an owl perched up I noticed some Mistletoe in the Lime trees, the first time I'd seen it hear (although some is visible north of the river at Thorpe St Andrew). The Coltsfoot was in flower and I also noticed an as yet unidentified fungus on willow buds.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtit_Klkq-8YRT1s8g1uhAy504PRo8Hh6TsdcC_jZCezsmon1qUt-gjVA73cnLnGyBgEF0aNrA0oKkCH9XxJwZxmZY1hToegQPr_cGbtXrjWdUwv8yp2W2g1CLZjpD4thSLscCdQ2MGag6mdS5BFp9EBzVOYvCXZ5lhSwLXWJ9yFKH41jZEODl_Dub/s3200/P3121610.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtit_Klkq-8YRT1s8g1uhAy504PRo8Hh6TsdcC_jZCezsmon1qUt-gjVA73cnLnGyBgEF0aNrA0oKkCH9XxJwZxmZY1hToegQPr_cGbtXrjWdUwv8yp2W2g1CLZjpD4thSLscCdQ2MGag6mdS5BFp9EBzVOYvCXZ5lhSwLXWJ9yFKH41jZEODl_Dub/s320/P3121610.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYnHaSLnpY3_rQ4ywDC5bsmPBAmYUuPoka4tIetw8YLayvwHZLydDDTx6uq1ZYJlwrObgM_0tEOvgfTcpVeVypADAVfPXo9rj_TJXb1i-v_vEy6NwHS1khwRmCriq7LHZTGpv-8vheghgjYxVW-EGvtH05y5ihOZDT5r5t6zxUm22_O9K8jPsgFlEt/s3200/P3121615.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYnHaSLnpY3_rQ4ywDC5bsmPBAmYUuPoka4tIetw8YLayvwHZLydDDTx6uq1ZYJlwrObgM_0tEOvgfTcpVeVypADAVfPXo9rj_TJXb1i-v_vEy6NwHS1khwRmCriq7LHZTGpv-8vheghgjYxVW-EGvtH05y5ihOZDT5r5t6zxUm22_O9K8jPsgFlEt/s320/P3121615.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv_SWc6sLPHxbh9SR1k8N-mlczYF_ng0P767WkxymDeU_SsM8Sgh7nmh0KHtBbeKHx0hXPSbespsqXQYr3TULWoAV-m_6QszenTlDMrsWDUBnHuhP0Suiv17cXTsHDKeNdLagLJby9K141QV2z1gM2f3RRawK04G1FlKtgjdNWouMC5aNuKWq0nsm5/s3200/P3121620.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv_SWc6sLPHxbh9SR1k8N-mlczYF_ng0P767WkxymDeU_SsM8Sgh7nmh0KHtBbeKHx0hXPSbespsqXQYr3TULWoAV-m_6QszenTlDMrsWDUBnHuhP0Suiv17cXTsHDKeNdLagLJby9K141QV2z1gM2f3RRawK04G1FlKtgjdNWouMC5aNuKWq0nsm5/s320/P3121620.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn75og3mWFY3YrpxT6TgJYXrJ8LEqcaeRcBdbsCktXUdbuuO5bmQEgVqPj58ylb-o94YytFQqF2jUHn7pMeZjOLWqgJunJzh_8enr-gFLOJ3d_jjVHTGS3Ed48Nl8Ddy9ZVfX0Ysja12meY4JQWkTR2jKxG364_MLHXmhnfbf9CXqHilOi7zJ8RtLX/s3200/P3121657.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn75og3mWFY3YrpxT6TgJYXrJ8LEqcaeRcBdbsCktXUdbuuO5bmQEgVqPj58ylb-o94YytFQqF2jUHn7pMeZjOLWqgJunJzh_8enr-gFLOJ3d_jjVHTGS3Ed48Nl8Ddy9ZVfX0Ysja12meY4JQWkTR2jKxG364_MLHXmhnfbf9CXqHilOi7zJ8RtLX/s320/P3121657.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>James Emersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895693455349558444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-641288652227497849.post-33393596365893306322023-05-07T21:43:00.003+01:002023-05-07T21:43:31.673+01:00BROADLAND: Hickling pony checks<p><b>11th March 2023</b></p><p>I took my eldest daughter to Hickling for a Wildlife Watch event to see the ponies. As well as tracking down and visiting the Koniks, the group looked for tracks and signs, such as the poo of Red Deer and Chinese Water Deer. We heard and saw several Cranes, heard Bearded Tits and on the way back got excellent views of an Adder basking by the path.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsF1C8ZVMYtuKTbyNxVJ4QBy0fkgOZv99KhBJrayQkXT6u6S0UM6VezWjsEEgSDrIjtJC0bcsv7sbenydudHZQpEYaEx0qGFIFYOVQGZ_oVPoohTQyFWdmZ29khjBt4KZYLbH4n2FQikhOVMcW6kT4iEUSxfIo2ZSj1h3JHU0nR5TfrqYS8TMlEuJH/s3200/1%20Konik.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsF1C8ZVMYtuKTbyNxVJ4QBy0fkgOZv99KhBJrayQkXT6u6S0UM6VezWjsEEgSDrIjtJC0bcsv7sbenydudHZQpEYaEx0qGFIFYOVQGZ_oVPoohTQyFWdmZ29khjBt4KZYLbH4n2FQikhOVMcW6kT4iEUSxfIo2ZSj1h3JHU0nR5TfrqYS8TMlEuJH/s320/1%20Konik.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB_384TjeNhFotyoj5KfKuwAEX-EJ9hro6W8H-l9edxA6Ye9V7YKKqfTuefih_TDAL7rQMnEhJvxMQSoCvFKG8SoN1fJQkmNds-hfkQ65CnXWIkVUcumktU1I2X7b3tq9VueHLwZhRwUk77NTxIa5_ElM_ylPINstj8Gc6-xPb6s9y30NmdfclHgZ8/s3200/P3111564.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB_384TjeNhFotyoj5KfKuwAEX-EJ9hro6W8H-l9edxA6Ye9V7YKKqfTuefih_TDAL7rQMnEhJvxMQSoCvFKG8SoN1fJQkmNds-hfkQ65CnXWIkVUcumktU1I2X7b3tq9VueHLwZhRwUk77NTxIa5_ElM_ylPINstj8Gc6-xPb6s9y30NmdfclHgZ8/s320/P3111564.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx0XgIyoP7h_fnKC9hcKxcjc55CLkVoXKYB6oD4db_VXPSo9ZhjYzJ7k6F3CX0CdSK7im9Xb_E9jzFtZYEFa6nTwEqnfhIpH5HE2-5yAhRKcucukKscGSDpT-oCl-3iRdvV6yE5FoX91M9SY892ymMP-C7iHMz9WwwI_fbRU2mv6t8KbWq3Cx2xdhI/s3200/P3111571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="3200" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx0XgIyoP7h_fnKC9hcKxcjc55CLkVoXKYB6oD4db_VXPSo9ZhjYzJ7k6F3CX0CdSK7im9Xb_E9jzFtZYEFa6nTwEqnfhIpH5HE2-5yAhRKcucukKscGSDpT-oCl-3iRdvV6yE5FoX91M9SY892ymMP-C7iHMz9WwwI_fbRU2mv6t8KbWq3Cx2xdhI/s320/P3111571.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixPIS5tH5FFXXltu_AI53xSE3J4v3XN1mqAez8pXTRGlbSzKukQ_rQAdHTG6mhLLD0tlZIQOK_wFY3tJn22JxSSNVur4S6PRd-EEka8uGCPy-RbHc-D9rS-vypoUVfiuyMpLfevt_q_M6kXNDlxXzQxNJg1uERZU5UznLXRHD4iKWFK_3VPlcFTaZN/s1515/Adder%20crop.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1136" data-original-width="1515" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixPIS5tH5FFXXltu_AI53xSE3J4v3XN1mqAez8pXTRGlbSzKukQ_rQAdHTG6mhLLD0tlZIQOK_wFY3tJn22JxSSNVur4S6PRd-EEka8uGCPy-RbHc-D9rS-vypoUVfiuyMpLfevt_q_M6kXNDlxXzQxNJg1uERZU5UznLXRHD4iKWFK_3VPlcFTaZN/s320/Adder%20crop.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>James Emersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895693455349558444noreply@blogger.com0
